Partition of Tharavad

Lord of 18 ½ Kalams:

The Ullanat Tharavad had extensive lands, but most of the lands were given on lease.  It is said that the family was collecting about 60,000 Paras of paddy every year as Pattam, which means that the extent of landed property was enormous.  More than 70% of the then Ponnani Taluk was owned by Ullanat family and there was a saying that no one could cross Ponnani Taluk without stepping on the land of Ullanat Panicker!

Besides the lands given on lease, the family owned Kalams at various places.  Kalapuras (Houses at Kalams) were originally meant for managing the land in the respective areas where they were constructed.  Each Kalam had land measuring from 5 to 8 acres under own possession with a residential building in that.

The senior members of the family below the Mootha Panicker were entitled to stay there with their wives and children according to seniority in each Kalam.  They could never own the Kalam house nor interfere with the collection of paddy and whenever the member died the next member and his family could occupy on the basis of seniority or as allotted by the Mootha Panicker.  Only the male members with their family (wives and children) stayed in the Kalams and women always lived in the Tharavad house- Athit Bhavanam.  Each Kalam had a supervisor (Karyasthan) who was directly accountable to the Mootha Panicker.  The Mootha Panicker had an office with 15 or 16 clerks at Kadavallur house and there was a Chief Accountant or Supervisor.  The Ullanat Tharavad had eighteen major Kalams and one small KalamKalam - somewhere near Engandiyur) and the Ullanat Mootha Panicker was known as the Adhipan (Lord) of Pathinettarakkalam.  But later many of these Kalams got amalgamated and at the time of partition only thirteen Kalams existed and the following members lived there.
